It's a question we hear all the time, especially from drivers who are just getting started. You already have insurance on your pickup. Why pay for a whole new policy just to haul a few loads while you get your business off the ground?
Here's the short answer: no. A personal auto policy is not built for hot shot trucking, and relying on one could cost you far more than a commercial policy ever would.

Personal auto insurance is designed for everyday driving: commuting, running errands, taking a road trip. It's priced for that level of risk.
Most personal auto policies specifically exclude using your vehicle to haul property for a fee. The moment you hook up a trailer and deliver a load for pay, you've stepped outside what your personal policy was written to cover. Many policies also limit coverage for heavier vehicles and business use.
Picture this: you're hauling a load of pipe to a job site, and a car pulls out in front of you. You can't stop in time. There are injuries, the other car is totaled, and the pipe ends up across the road.
If you only have a personal auto policy, here's what could happen:
One accident can wipe out everything you've worked to build, including your truck, your savings, and your business.
Even if you wanted to take the risk, a personal policy won't get you on the road legally. To activate your MC authority, your insurance company has to file proof of commercial liability coverage with the FMCSA. Personal auto insurers don't make those filings.
Brokers won't book you either. They'll ask for a certificate of insurance showing commercial liability and cargo coverage before they hand you a load.
To haul hot shot loads, you'll need a commercial policy built for trucking. At a minimum, that usually means primary auto liability and motor truck cargo coverage, with physical damage to protect your truck and trailer. Most hot shot truckers do, and that's okay. Your commercial policy can be set up to account for how you use your truck, both on and off the clock. If you're leased onto a carrier, non trucking liability can cover you when you're driving for personal reasons. The key is letting your agent know exactly how you use the truck so there are no gaps.
We get it. Commercial insurance is a big expense when you're just starting out. But it's a lot smaller than the cost of an uncovered accident. As an independent agency, Hutsenpiller Insurance shops multiple insurance companies to find commercial coverage that fits your operation and your budget, so you can haul with confidence.
