How Much Does Hot Shot Trucking Insurance Cost?

Written by Caetie Page | Oct 24, 2026, 2:44:59 AM

It's the first question almost every hot shot trucker asks, and for good reason. Insurance is one of the biggest bills you'll pay to keep your truck on the road, and you can't get your authority active without it.

The honest answer? It depends. But that doesn't mean you have to go in blind. Here's what hot shot insurance typically costs, what drives your price up or down, and what you can do to keep it manageable.

The Short Answer

In 2026, most hot shot operators pay somewhere between $7,000 and $30,000 a year, or roughly $600 to $2,500 a month, per truck.

That's a wide range, we know. Where you land depends on your experience, your record, what you haul, and how much coverage you carry. An experienced driver with a clean record hauling general freight in a small area will sit near the low end. A brand new authority running nationwide with high value cargo will sit near the top.

What Affects the Cost of Hot Shot Insurance?

Insurance companies look at a lot of details when pricing your policy. These are the big ones:

  • How long you've had your authority. New authorities almost always pay more because insurers don't have a track record to go on. (More on that in [LINK: Why Is Hot Shot Insurance So Expensive for New Authorities?])
  • Your driving record. Tickets, accidents, and violations on your MVR can raise your rate fast.
  • Your claims history. Past claims tell insurers what to expect in the future.
  • What you haul. General freight usually prices better than high value or higher risk loads like heavy equipment or vehicles.
  • How far you run. A local or regional operation typically costs less than running coast to coast.
  • Where your truck is garaged. Your ZIP code plays a role, since traffic, weather, and theft rates vary by area.
  • Your truck and trailer value. More expensive equipment costs more to protect.
  • Your limits and deductibles. Higher limits cost more. Higher deductibles can bring your premium down.

What Coverage Are You Paying For?

Not every hot shot policy looks the same, and the coverage you choose makes a big difference in price. Most policies are built from a few core pieces:

  • Primary liability. Required by law. Pays for injuries and damage you cause to others. Most brokers want to see $1,000,000.
  • Motor truck cargo. Protects the freight you're hauling. Most brokers want at least $100,000.
  • Physical damage. Covers repairs to your own truck and trailer after an accident, theft, fire, or weather. If your truck is financed, your lender will likely require it.

Liability alone will be your lowest price, but it won't get you many loads and won't protect your equipment. Adding cargo and physical damage raises the premium but gives you the coverage brokers ask for and protection for the rig you depend on.

Monthly Payments Aren't Always Annual Divided by 12

Here's one that surprises a lot of drivers. Many commercial policies require a down payment up front, then spread the rest over the remaining months. That means your first payment can be noticeably bigger than your regular monthly bill. Plan for it so it doesn't catch you off guard when you're getting started.

How to Keep Your Hot Shot Insurance Affordable

You can't control everything, but you can control more than you might think:

  • Protect your driving record. Every clean month helps.
  • Avoid a lapse in coverage. A gap makes you look riskier to insurers and can cost you at renewal.
  • Be honest and accurate on your application. Surprises at binding usually mean a higher premium.
  • Choose your radius wisely. If you mostly run regional, don't pay for nationwide.
  • Consider a higher deductible if you have the savings to cover it.
  • Shop your policy. Rates can vary a lot from one insurance company to the next.
